Quieting gear noise.

Actually it is a grease that sprays on and is very tacky. When you first spray it on, it is rather runny, but it quickly 'dries' somewhat and becomes very sticky. It is designed to stay on a motorcycle chain without getting thrown off at high speeds. There is one out there that I have not yet tried called Maxima Chain Wax. It is designed for dirt bikes and it supposedly forms a waxy coating similar to cosmoline. It would maybe be a little less messy.

Apparently egg cartons are very good at sound deadening

Cheers phil

Hahaha, yeahhhh the egg cartons. I used to line the spaces between the floor joists in the basement in my parents house to deaden the sound when I had band practice. In theory it works, in reality, it did nothing... the cops regularly shut us down. (Parents were up north at the trailer during summer weekends)

Okay well thats something to keep in mind. Luckily my kids stay up later than me now So not normally a problem. You musta been a loud band to get the cops called on you

Cheers Phil

Shawn Like I said in post #9 the Esso open gear lube is extremely tacky. It lasts me a long time between applications.

I am in the same boat. I crashed my new lathe and since then it make excessive noise when gears are engaged. A solution may be to install a dc motor for powerfeed as shown in the video. For this the powerfeed rod needs be extended a bit. Any good idea for the extension of the rod that ends flush with the cast iron wall?

Could always bore out the inside of the screw and thread/pin a shaft to extend it...?

My first choice would be to figure out what damage occurred.
Gears missing some teeth? Shafts bent? Pins sheared?
Maybe you got lucky and some gears just slid on a banjo bracket?

Note: I am not saying all my jobs go smoothly, I am glad to have some slip in my flat belt when things have gone bad. In fact, for some jobs I slacken it just a little.......

Belt slip is the best slip... softer start ups and no damaging crashes.
