After Cleaning the lathe and purchasing a RPC It still did not run. The Control Circuit did not work. It was Completely dead. Broke out my voltage tester and started checking.

1) Incoming Voltage Checked - Good @ 230 volts before the disconnect & Main fuses
2) Voltage checked after disconnect - Good @ 230volts - Fuses all good.
3) Voltage checked @ Control Transformer input side (230vPrimary) - Good @230 volts
4) Voltage Checked @ Control Transformer output side (115v Secondary)- Nothing

Findings Control Transformer was Bad. 230v input and no 115v output. The original stock 40 year old transformer was burnt out. It over heated and left some brown smoke staining on the gray mounting surface. The coil paper had melted black tar on one side and was very brittle. (Sorry No Pictures)

I went to the local Electrical parts house with the old transformer. The new one was north of $250 for Square D@ Grainger
Checked Ebay, Found a New old stock Cutler Hammer #CO250E2a direct fit.

Installed the Cutler Hammer unit. It had 115v output. Turned the lathe on.
The Main Line Contactor energized and clicked, but no power to the motor. Well one step closer!

I remember reading (Self Study) about a Spindle Interlock System on the Hardinge HLV-H. I pushed and pulled the spindle lock knob and nothing changed. No clicks or power..

I needed to check the Spindle Interlock Switch Located behind the Hardinge badging.

I Removed the switch and it tested good- open and closed.

Why was switch staying in the open position and not energizing the Spindle Interlock Contactor?

I checked the Locking pin and Knob assembly.

Findings
The mechanical pin was broken and not closing the switch to energize the Interlock contactor.

New pin /lock. (Picture from ebay $50.00) Mine was missing the pin at the end. That pin rides in the grove and allows a spring plunger to engage and disengage the switch. Thus supplying power to engage the Spindle Interlock Contactor.

I machined a new pin from a set screw with my mini lathe. Put it all back together.

Plunger now engaged the switch (Switch closed) fixed

Typo fixed. North of $250 Square D @ Grainger. I remember they wanted me to purchase one that had 3 different input voltages, 230 was in the middle. I had no clue about fused non fused encapsulated ect,, Called my brother in-law he works HVAC. He helped me understand transformer ratings and what I should get. That at least I prevented being upsold.

$250 is still crazy. I used to use Grainger, but their prices have gotten out of line. Looks like you got the right transformer anyway.:encourage:
