ive got a 22 5 shot boot gun probably turn of the century, not a valuable firearm even if it was mint, the nickle is peeling off,is there a way to remove the nickle myself,im in calif and i dont think a plating shop would touch a firearm,im thinking about just bluing it afterwards unless someone can tell me of a homebrew way of re inckeling it, appreciate all advice dave

Soak it in liquid GUNK grease remover. After months, the nickel will have been dissolved. I had this happen when I forgot about a gun(of mine!) that I had soaking!! The steel was untouched.

then again polish the steel showing thru and keep it as is.. Just a thought.

There we some cold bluing mixtures out there. One little trick that helps , clean it good , before adding the bluing heat it gently with a torch or oven warm the metal not real hot between 200 + 300 degrees. It makes the finish go deeper and color nicer. I've done a lot of touch ups and they all come out decent. The only steel that doesn't is a nickel steel used in some Winchesters at least the shotguns. Even the Birchwood Casey creme bluing in a tube.
