I'm new to machining in general but very mechanically inclined as I've done it all from construction to auto mechanic work. I recently pulled the trigger on a lathe and mill as well as quite a few other goodies, and have been avidly following several horological builds (clickspring on you tube, David Walters double pendulum build on another site, etc). I've been lurking around for a LONG time now and am looking to build my first clock from scratch.

Any help would be greatly appreciated wheather it's simply best practices, advice on machine operation, or plain outright horological mastermind insight-I'm all ears.

Hi Nick
For your first adventure into clock building my best advice is to start with the simplest clock you can find , because there is a lot to learn and you need a clock that will tolerate mistakes you make in the learning process. Clockmaking is part engineering and part art. so following strict engineering principles often results in a non runner.
If you look in the Horological section of this site you will find my Beginners Clock It's worth a read just to see what is required.
If I can be any help you can contact me on this thread --send me a pm-- or through my rather tatty web site (see bottom of page)
Regards, Brian.

Brian thanks for the response. I took a look at your website as well as the video and photos on the congreve clock in your avatar and its great work.
Im considering one or two of the books by john wilding on constructing a skeleton clock. Have you seen the books or heard anything on them?
I know I have a long road ahead of me and im already planning on having to make everything twice haha.
Also if you havent seen the series, check out clicksprings channel on youtube. He´s building a wilding clock and was one of my main inspirations thus far.

Hi Nick
Yes I know Wilding's books well. I have a copy of the Elegant scroll frame skeleton clock book, So if you go that route I can follow along if you need me.
Look up M.P. co. uk for a catalogue. also iantcobb .co.uk. more suppliers on my site I think.
Clickspring's work is fantastic isn't it
Keep in touch. Brian
