I was impressed with the quality of this set of carbide tool holders that I bought from Amazon for $79.99. For a newbe that has a hard time grinding tool bits it would be a big help. Each holder has a new carbide insert included.
So you get 14 sharp cutting edges with the set.
I have no problem grinding tools as I have been grinding tool bits for over 60 years. I don't care if it is HSS or carbide.
I am also a fan of the positive rake these tools have on lathes with low horsepower.
If you look at my Avatar you can see some of my hand ground form tools for the balls in the cube. So I know how to grind tools.

I have the small 1/4 inch set for micro lathes, and have cut many items with them. I have a hard time grinding some tools so these help at times.
 
Why buy a "set" at all? I use 3 OD turning tools an 80 DEG. turn and face tool, a 27 DEG. when the part requires a very small diameter so that I don't hit the center and a straight parting, tool for simple OD turning this is all that you will ever need.

For OD threading and grooving I use a Kennametal Top Notch that will use metric, inch, Acme, buttress and Whitworth thread inserts in the same holder as well as straight grooving inserts of different widths, if the part is thin enough one can part it off with the grooving tool.. They are very well made and cost a good deal but are well worth it when you realize that there are 50 different inserts available for the single holder.

And yes I realize that you are a hobbyist and that this sort of tooling is a bit expensive at first yet buying a tool that will accept many different inserts is like buying a set of 50 different tools.
Think about it that way.

Before I looked at the 7 piece set I checked price of inserts for the set. And I found inserts on eBay for around $2 each. Even the cutoff ones and the threading inserts.
I know they are not brand names but I am no longer working in a production shop
Cutting stuff like Inconel and the like but if I was I would still give these tools a try.
 
I went to Amazon and looks like the set I bought is out of stock. But I found a set from Grizzly that looks the same # t10293. The set comes with a insert cut off tool and a threading insert tool and the turning tools. I looked for the inserts on ebay and found them cheaper there. Not brand names but they looked like good quality.

PS they are not brand names but for $11.48 ea I think a good value.

I have a similar (same?) set but in 5/8. Works well for what I do.
