California Bans Non-detergent Motor Oil: What To Use Instead?

What brand of machine is that?
Kind of looks like my pre-1930 Sidney.

I never intended to start any type of disagreement. The OP said he has a 74 year old lathe, I personally would not use any type of detergent oil in that machine. My answer was for those, like me, that have machines older than we are.
I have a friend who has a few year old Charter Oak CNC mill; they specify non-detergent oil with a de-foaming agent added.
Everyone has an opinion. You can pick from column A, B or C

Here is a photo of my headstock, gears are made of un-obtainium so they are real expensive. I wouldn't even attempt to replace any bearings.

Hope I did not come across as disagreeing.

I'm having a similar debate on the transfer cases (NP203's) in several of my trucks. The manufacturer specifies 10W-30, SE grade, which the SE has been considered obsolete since the late 70's. My issues are the detergent use in a non filtered situation, and that the newer oils are not considered brass friendly.

I have the same concern as many, with my old machines being made of unobtanium parts. (4 head Fosdick 4bm drill press, and 1947 Van norman 22LU). Even on my 4003G lathe, I have contemplated making a small seperatly powered oil pump, and filter to help with maintaining clean oil, and hopefully add to the life span of the machines.

Especially with newer machines, I have some concerns that the manufacturer is not intending the machine to last more then 10 years or so. I doubt my 4003G will be around in 70 years, even with all the care that can be done. Its just not made to the standards that my VN22LU was.

Hope I did not come across as disagreeing.
.

No, you didn't :)
and I agree with what you are saying about the different oils.
I have a newer VN 22L, from what I've been able to gather it's one of the last ones made

The photo of the headstock is of a Monarch 16CW (War Baby)

maybe already did

Looks like the independent lubricant manufacturers association wants them to consider farm equipment etc. use of the old oils if the use is printed on the packaging. Item number#6 of the PDF listing.

They probably didn't consider the request. Probably need to outlaw farm equipment anyway.

Yea, it does not meet EPA sniff test that they do on cars.

Thanks everyone for your responses on this question. One auto parts guy said the local John Deere dealer might have some appropriate oil. One of you mentioned Tractor Supply Co, nearest store is 20 miles away, I'll check these out. And two of you have offered to ship me some. I may follow up on that.

Note to JA: The Logan lathe does have an oil reservoir -- in the apron. On the ways, I use chainsaw bar oil.

I was unaware about WD-40 issues, but saw it on the shelf in Target yesterday. Apparently it is a new, CA-only formulation, with reduced volatile organics, but no special CA markings.

Another CA-banned item of interest is cold-bluing solution, typically used on firearms; I use it on various home-made tools. Next week I'm going out of state and may get some oil and bluing there. (In lieu of the bluing, I've generally just been heating the parts and dropping them in used oil.)

I picked up a gallon of Mobile Velocite #10 Spindle Oil for my Logan 820 and use it for everything except the ways. For the ways I use Vactra Way oil (#2 if I remember correctly). Both came from Enco when they offered free shipping which seems to happen every few months. A gallon of each will probably last until I'm dead. They typically sell for about $20 a gallon, not much more than cheap non-detergent motor oil and probably better for this application anyway.

Now if you want to complain about CA stuff, those C.A.R.B. compliant gas cans that the EPA has imposed on all of us. that's another story!

They need to ban stupid here it is running rampant in the Bay Area,
WD 40 in spray can looks like milk now , I get the gallon and it seems normal
Yup new gas cans are junk now

Where it matters is lawn equipment.

If not a pressurized filtered system the stuff stays in solution and ruins the engine.

Non - detergent allows it to settle into bottom of sump.

Wonder what warranty states lately?
