Enco 9x20 Won't Run In Reverse

I have an Enco 9X20 that was made in 1988. I've owned it about 6 months and have used it a fair amount. The other day I was turning some Delrin rod to size and was stopping frequently to measure diameter. One time after taking a measurement I went to turn the lathe back on and accidentally turned the switch the wrong way (to the reverse position). Nothing happened. The motor just hums.

I'm not particularly good with electronics. I can solder, check for continuity, measure resistance, but that's about it. Wouldn't really know where to start troubleshooting.

Anyone have a guess as to what's wrong? Would appreciate any insight.

bad capacitor or switch contact

bad capacitor or switch contact

Thanks TM.

So I just checked the wiring diagram in the Grizzly manual. There are two caps: one start and one run. Here's a potentially dumb question: would a bad cap allow it to run in forward but not run in reverse? The humming is very similar to one time I had a bad starter cap on a pool pump motor, now that I think about it. Not that that means anything.

A new spindle switch is $44 from Grizzly. If that's the problem, does anyone know of an alternate source? Don't mind a lot paying 44 bucks but would hate to find out after the fact they're available for less.

it can...try spin starting it...

Check your switch
If runs good in forward and does not run in Reverse
This does happen a lot to old drum switches
Most time a bug has die on the reverse contact simple fix just sand the contact
Other times may need to bend the contact back in to place

If it is a toggle switch just replace they hard to take apart to fix

Good luck

Thanks all for the input. I'll get in there and take a look around one of these days. Sounds like it should be an easy fix.

Well I learned one thing: it will run in reverse if I spin-start it by the pulley.

Most likely the one set of contacts inside your the reverse contactor assembly is bad and your only getting 110v to the motor, that's why it's humming and you can spin start it, if you have access to a volt meter it's easy to check as long as your comfortable around the electrical panel.

motor magnet /angle/timing... isn't always equal in both directions...the cap may have enough umph to start forward but not enough for reverse....have you noticed the motor running hot
