Got this little toolmakers oven for Christmas.
I plan to hard wire her, so the Romex is temporary, and the front safety cover is off.
Suppose I'll move the tape measure as well.....
4x4x9 120volt, 1phase, 20amp.
Little guy.

Anybody have any experience with ovens?
The thermo-couple dangles from the top of the rear wall of the oven and droops toward the center.
Wondering if that is supposed to happen or if there is a way to somehow secure it to the top.
Perhaps it is supposed to dangle into the center?

Suggestions?
Ideas?

Thank you,
Daryl

i don't have experience with that particular oven, but i'd look for signs of mounting of the thermocouple,
perhaps a missing piece of hardware?

Yeah,
I already looked.
Nothing. No holes for a bracket.
Perhaps they are supposed to dangle so as not monitor heat at the center?
Cuts the space by half!!
Arrrgh.

I should have captured a pic of the top of the oven.
Perhaps I'll catch a pic of the inside and post.

Seems like the oven had the thermocouple and control unit below added to the unit, does not look like a factory install. You would put the thermacouple in the oven where you wanted the temperature measured, I do not think it was supposed to be mounted. I would probably prop it up a little to measure the air temperature.

HI Daryl, the little oven looks great. I'd love to get into heat treat & grinding - beyond simply a torch & tool steel.

Daryl. That oven looks close to the one I have it's a thermolyne ImageUploadedByTapatalk1451185989.130558.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1451186036.903434.jpg mine is set up for 220 10.3 amp. If it is the same the thermocouple comes in from the back between the connections for the heat plates and it mounts top center of oven.

I just found a similar heat treating furnace on CL, and will be picking it up this Monday. Can't tell from the photos what brand it is, though. Have to wait and see.

It's all up to you on thermal couple placement. Loose allows for some movement you can put it near what you are heating, in the air or contact.

Mount it is good too. It all depends on your needs or just things to keep in mind when heating.

They are easily replaceable and do not need to be expensive. For anyone who needs a good primer on them look at omega.com. Very useful info also a great place to have one made or buy supplies to make.

FYI advice is from years of using in the laboratory
