So my saturday started out as normal as any, wake up get dressed and head for the shop. I tinkered with several projects that I have going on till about mid-day.
One project required me to turn a weld off of a cast steel part in order to reuse it. The only way to hold it with the chuck was from the inside of a cast diameter.
It was not consintric with the machined surface I was atempting to reclaim by about .010.
I took a break to wrap my head around the situation. My wife asked me if there was anything special i needed to make this easier. I replied I need a 4 jaw chuck. She said look on craigslist to see if one is available. I did and found Herb Blair ( a popular Youtuber, and a member of this fourm) was selling a 4 jaw for $1800. I know what your thinking $1800 for a four jaw is way to much, but he was throwing in a 12x30 lathe to sweeten the deal! I contacted him, we came to an agreement and I headed out for Herbs house Sunday morning. By 9:30 sunday night the lathe was in my shop. Now to get it back on the stands and get some juice to it.
This lathe will replace the central machinery 9x20.
I will post some pictures later on in the week. :)

So I snapped some pics this morning.
First off I got to the house last night right at dark, and I had to get the lathe unloaded as I needed the pickup to go to work the next morning.
I have a pipe A-frame that I could use to remove the lathe, but the 250 feet from the drop site to the shop door across sand and grass is what presented the problem.
So in true " figure ot out as you go" fashion I cobbled together an OSB road.

Heavy duty furniture dollies provided the roll.

From arival to final destination in the shop took an hour and 45 minutes........all in the dark.

nice looking lathe but how come some much ply wood4 sheets would have done it run off 2 put that 2 ahead of lathe bingo a lot less to pick up gotogojo

I was given a boat load of half sheets of OSB. So it was quicker to lay them out and get it done. I cut the last piece to fit in to the door frame about 18 inches so the lathe could roll right in over the threshold.

i like the 4 jaw chuck offer :) looks like quite the upgrade over your old lathe

Congrats on the new addition!

I'm glad I can back the truck right up to the shop doors.

I got the lathe on the stands and in its final resting spot. My floor is less than stellar so it was scary tippy.

I did not want to mark the holes, move the lathe, drill the holes, install the bolt, replace lathe, then spend eternity trying to shim, and tighten the bolts through the little 2"x3" window the manufacturer provided. So I visited my favorite welding shop to see if some angle iron drops were available.
$12 dollars and a few minutes bs'in with the man got me to 24" pieces of 2.5"x3" angles. A few cuts on the chop saw and 8 holes later I had some weld to fit external hold downs.

I will run the wire tomorrow night, providing I get off at a decent time, then its on to slingin chips!
