1948 - Köping S8

So, it's been a while since my last post here. Work on the lathe has been on-going. Didn't get really started until after christmas though.

Started stripping the paint, had to use a airpower needle hammer to get the flaking old paint and boddy filler of. A LOT of work :p
Then painted the rear of the lathe (as this would be hard to reach after moving to its final destination).

I have also removed the old electrical system completely, and mounted all new wiring, contactor, motor protection switch and controll buttons. Also mounted an emergency stop switch.

My workshop consists of a 70m2 garage and a 20m2 small ekstra room in the back.
Lathe and mill are both situated in this smal room, as this is the only part of the workshop with insulation.
The room is cramped, but it works ok.

I had to do some re-organizating to fit the new lathe though. So I spent about two weekends moving shelves and misc mess around. Threw out a full trailer load of crap, and still have another pile of stuff to throw out.

To be able to handle all the heavy parts (tail stock, apron+++) I had to build a jib crane as well.

This weekend I finally got the lathe placed in its new spot. As well as the milling machine.
Now I just have to finish painting, before assembly.
Hopefully it will be up and running before easter. image.jpg

New week, new update.

Made good progress on the lathe this weekend. It's realy nice seeing it going back together.

The jib crane was worth every penny, mounting the apron and quick change gearbox.
Each weighing in exess of 100kg, handling it safely alone without lifting capacity would be challenging at best.
It is suprizing just how much time it takes when every little part needs to be cleaned of 65+ years worth of old chips, grease, cooland and old paint.
All went good, and I did not even have any "spare" parts left over in the end.

I'm really looking forward to geting it running now :)

Nice work on the lathe! Your jib is making me think I need to put a project on the list for next year, it would sure get used a lot! Thanks for posting!

That looks to be a very nice lathe. You know when you look at that mt5 tailstock that you got a machine capable of doing some real work. I like your jib crane. I have worked in shops with those and they are really handy.

How is the progress on the lathe? I have been following this thread and if I had the room, would have a Köping as well. Very nice machines and I have been lucky enough to have used one. People don't seem impressed when they look at them the first time but once you have used them and understand how strong and smooth they are, you really start to appreciate the machine.

So, it's been a while since the last update. The reason being that there has been little progress lately.
The reason being that me and my girlfriend bought a new house this spring.. That has pretty much occupied all my time..

However the house came with a double garage (45m2), which will act as my new workshop.
It will be a little cramped, but I get to bring my machines close to home (I now have to drive 40 minutes each way). That's going to be a big improvement.
I have put up a wall, dividing the space in two. I will have mill and lath in one section, together with work bench and tooling. This space will be insulated and heated. While the other section will house welding, grinding, etc (and one of our cars).
Currently I am working on the electrics, wiring up power outlets and new lighting. I also need to upgrade the main power input, as I need a 3-phase 230V - 32A power supply.
That is going to be a "project on-going" for awhile. Hopefully I can start moving in equipment before winter, as I need to rent a truck with lifting capacity to move lathe and mill 40km.

For now house upgrades are priority No.1, as my boss (ref. girlfriend) has high expectations to my work progress on the house.. :D
