Well I piled up the gear box in my mini mill the other day and was looking at belt drive kits for 130 bucks there pretty expencive so my brain started thinking I have heard of people scraping treadmills for lathes y not beef up up the mini mill found a treadmill on kijiji for free all that was wrong with it was a blown fuse on the motor controller so on to the project I was pleasantly surprised that it had a 2 hp 90 volt DC motor plan on using the belt and pulls of the treadmill just wondering has any one done this anyone done this any help full hints or constructive criticism trying to figure out the mounting aspect of the motor will post some pictures as I get going

I installed a 2.5 HP treadmill motor and controller on my X2 mini mill and love it. It was to be a temporary fix while I waited for parts to fix the origional controller, but I liked the improvement so much I left it. I mad a pully from the hub of the treadmill flywheel, and longer spacers to mount the motor. My mill already had the belt drive conversion done.

Any chance you have some. Pictures of how you mounted the motor it would be greatly appreciated.

I think there's pics on my other computer inside. If I find them, I'll post them, if not I'll take some.

I have found some pictures of the treadmill motor install. My mill was purchased second hand. The previous owner had installed a belt conversion. I don't remember where he got it or if he made it himself. I made longer spacers for the motor mounting plate, and used part of the treadmill flywheel to make the belt pulley for it.

I will go out to the shop and take better picctures tomorrow.
The picture shows the treadmill motor mounted. The controller, the venerable MC-60, is mounted on the benchtop behind the mill. I put the speed control pot in place of the origional fuse on the mill control panel. I added the aluminum panel to the right of the origional control panel for the power switch. No other mods required.

Very nice gives me some ideas thanks for sharing

I took some more pics today between mowing lawn and working on a project for a friend. They are all close ups of the treadmill motor and the pulley I made from it's flywheel. The small groves are for the origional groved belt. The flywheel pic is of a similar flywheel that serves to show the bit I cut off to make the motor pulley. I didn't have the exact same type of flywheel, but you get the idea. The small diameter on the one I used had the groves for the belt drive. I used it because it was threaded to screw onto the motor, 1/2-13 LH thread.

Anything not clear, or other questions, let me know.

OK so I fired it up for the first time today boy oh boy gobs of torque I can not stall the motor even at low rpm speaking of rpm 0 to scary fast only issue I see is the tilting column there is so much torque and weight now it moves the column out of trim so I am going to have to remove that feature not like I use it any way all in all I am very happy best of all it was free so far now to finish welding it up get the wiring and enclosures done and dress up work make it look perdey and it's a wrap add more photos once totally complete maybe a video 2
